IB never prescribes vocabulary lists for any language acquisition courses. Therefore, the words in this spreadsheet are by no means a compulsory list that must be taught/learned by IBDP Mandarin ab initio teachers/students. The original draft of this spreadsheet with 1314 words was made by Venus Liu, HS Teacher of Chinese at UWCSEA, in 2016, for her students use only. Teachers are encouraged to build their vocabulary pool that allows for inquiry-based, learner-centered and authentic learning, and is meaningful to learner's communicative needs as well as the development of international-mindedness and intercultural understanding, according to the newly published Language ab initio guide and Mandarin ab initio language-specific syllabus for the first assessment in 2020.
