Hello, Chinese is designed and compiled mainly based on the teaching philosophy stated in Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century and ACTFL's Performance Guidelines for K--12 Learners. Hello, Chinese highlights the "5Cs", namely, Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.
The textbook covers 13 topics closely related to or of interest to children’s lives, including classrooms, colors, numbers, fruits, food, animals, families, body parts, shapes, days of the week, weather, transportation and festivals. Each topic includes three learning parts. The first part lists commonly used words. The second part introduces the communicative functions, such as “references”, “brief introduction of personal interests”, “expressions of quantity and age”, and so on. The third part provides cultural points, such as introducing the Chinese zodiac under the topic of animals.
